Madagascar records of the U.S.P.G., 1866-1900 (inclusive) [microform].

The collection consists of letters from Madagascar and also includes letters from Mauritius and the Seychelles. Some letters refer to customs of the islands and events among the Hova, Betimisiraka and Sakalava people. The political background is also reflected, including the death of Rasata and the accession of Queen Ranavalona II in 1868. The Society's first two missionaries were stationed at Tamatave and Foule Point, but later were also at the capital, Antananarivo.

The Society for the Propagation of the Gospel in Foreign Parts was organized in 1701 under a charter granted by William III. Its activities began on the Gold Coast of Africa in 1752 and, eventually, spread worldwide. The original objectives of the S.P.G. were to provide bishops and a ministry and to establish schools for Anglican emigrants in the British overseas possessions.
